Veterans Repair Corps
Helping Veterans and their families build strength, stability, and independence through shelter.
Veterans Critical Repair is interior or exterior work performed to alleviate critical health, life and safety issues, or code violations, including a change to or repair of materials or components; a reconfiguration of space; a modification for accessibility; or the installation or extension of plumbing, mechanical, or electrical systems on an existing structure.
Projects can include existing Habitat homes, where a qualified Veteran resides.
Board-approved family selection criteria apply, including the need, willingness to partner, and the ability to repay the agreed upon percentage of repair.
The home must be owned, not rented. A Veteran must reside in the home as their primary residence.
The Patuxent Habitat for Humanity Executive Committee will approve or deny all requests.
Typical Areas of Concern are:
- Accessibility Modifications (grab bar, chair lifts, hand railings, bathroom modifications, wheelchair ramps)
- Weatherization (air sealing, insulation, energy efficient appliance upgrades)
- Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) repair/replacement, Attic or crawlspace ventilation repair/replacement
- Water heater repair/replacement
- Exterior repair/replacement (roof, gutter, fascia, siding)
- Electrical repair/replacement (outlet replacement, lighting, GFCI additions, CO and Smoke detectors, hearing impaired assistive devices)
- Plumbing repair/replacement (sink leak, disposal repair/replacement, sump pump, toilet repairs/replacement, shower tub issues)
- Foundation repair (flooring, water damage, floor system)
- Ingress/Egress repair/replacement (doors, decks, railings, driveway, sidewalk)
- Interior repair/replacement (doors, door widening, walls, ceilings, drywall, flooring)
- Kitchen repair/replacement (cabinets, appliances, range ventilation)
To be considered for the Veterans Repair Program, a household must have a Veteran living in the home as their primary residence. If discharged, the Veteran must have received a general or honorable discharge. The residence must be within the boundaries of St. Mary’s or Calvert County.
To start the process, the Veteran, or their representative, must e-mail vets@patuxenthabitat.org and provide the following information: (1) Full Name, Phone Number, Street Address, City, County, State, Zip, and e-mail; (2) Explain the area of concern and describe the repairs needed; and (3) Provide number of adults in the household and the household income. For consideration, the household income must be under 50% of the Maryland area median income. Your email will be reviewed, and a preliminary decision will be e-mailed, typically within 30 days.
